King and I

Final Movie Monday

08.05.11

For those that don't want the weekend to end, it's the final free Movie Monday at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on August 8.

Presented in the arts plaza, the series featured classic films including Beach Blanket Bingo (starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello), Harold and Maude and the latest revamp of the show Chicago.

This Monday, don't miss out on a screening of the original Rodgers and Hammerstein The King and I, which was chosen as the Audience Favorite in an on-line poll by last year’s attendees.

Once the sun sets (approximately 8p.m.), the film will be projected on the side of Segerstrom Hall and guests can begin picking out their spots around 5:30 p.m. You are also encouraged to bring your own snacks or pinic dinners, but barbecues and the like are not allowed.

As a special treat, a selection of the best short animated films from this year’s Newport Beach Film Festival will be shown prior to the main feature.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is located at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa.

Wear to Where: M O T H E R

08.03.11

It’s hard to imagine, given the incredibly over saturated designer denim market, two people thinking, “Hey! The world really needs more jeans.”

But Tim Kaeding and Lela Tillem of Mother Denim thought otherwise: “It’s been a while since any brand has stepped up and made a real difference in the market — judging from the reaction of our buyers, it’s only solidified our feelings.” And yes, their jeans actually are different. For one thing, they’re softer than any I've ever touched in the $150-$200 price range, and that’s not even counting their twill which comes in some sort of cotton equivalent to cashmere. Tim says, “We developed our twill with the same techniques we used to develop our denim, so that it would have the same characteristics, like incredible softness and rich colors.”

They’re also pushing flares and bell-bottoms instead of the usual how-skinny-can-you-go pant — even their skinny cut is called “The Skinny, Not Skinny” for its semi-slouchy bottom and flattering, but not skin tight fit.

As for the name, one of the designers hails from Seven for All Man Kind, and the other from Citizens of Humanity.

Each of those brand names, including Mother, appeal to everyone and sound entirely inclusive (to counteract the exclusive effects of $250 jeans no doubt), but Kaeding and Tillem just say, “‘Mother’ is a bad ass word.”
